Pearl Harbor Heros

Doris Miller

Doris Miller, known as "Dorie" to shipmates and friends, was born in Waco, Texas, on 12 October 1919, to Henrietta and Conery Miller. Following training at the Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Virginia, Miller was assigned to the ammunition ship USS Pyro (AE-1) where he served as a Mess Attendant, and on 2 January 1940 was transferred to USS West Virginia (BB-48), where he became the ship's heavyweight boxing champion. In July of that year he had temporary duty aboard USS Nevada (BB-36) at Secondary Battery Gunnery School. He returned to West Virginia and on 3 August, and was serving in that battleship when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. When the Japanese started to attack he was assigned to carry wounded sailors to the side. Then an officer ordered him to the bridge to aid the mortally wounded Captain of the ship. He subsequently manned a 50 caliber Browning anti-aircraft machine gun until he ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship. Miller was commended by the Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox on 1 April 1942, and on 27 May 1942 he received the Navy Cross, which Fleet Admiral (then Admiral) Chester W. Nimitz, the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet personally presented to Miller on board aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) for his extraordinary courage in battle.

Benjamin Vinci

He was drafted in March 1941 at 22 he completed basic traing in a few weeks Fort Eustis in Virginia. He was sent to Pearl Harbor right after basic training ended, and just short months before the attack. He was a few more days away from recieving his promotion to sergeant rank but the Japanese had came and stated to fire off. He was having breakfast then he heard the alarm go off so then he was ordered to go to his post. On his way to his post he got shot in his side. He didnt notice that he got shot until he got to his post. Despite his injury he continued to fight back and help his fellow troops in the battle. As soon as the attack was over he was went to the ambulance and forced to stay the night. He was allowed to return to active duty in June 1942. Shortly after he had to go back to the hospital not because he was sick but because he was a hero. He was presented with the distinguished Order of the Purple Heart.

George Welch

Welch was assigned to the 47th Fighter Squadron, 18th Fighter Group flying P-40 Kittyhawks at Wheeler Field, near Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1941. He was very rich, his family was the creators of welchs juice. He could of avoided the military if he wanted to. He was on his way back to the baracks after coming from a party with his friend Kenneth Taylor. Then out of nowhere the japanese came and started to bomb the barracks . Buildings and airplanes started to burn and go down in flames. As soon as the two got to there barracks they jumped in there planes and went to go fight without any orders. Both of them started to immediatly firing at the Japanese. Taylor shot down a bomber but Welchs plane had got hit so him and Taylor went back to a barcaks to get more ammo and another plane. when they got there the ammo that they needed was in a burning tower. Two brave mechanics went in there and got it for them. When they went to go fight again Welch got hit in his arm. Welch was nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions on Pearl Harbor Day, and the Air Force Chief, General Henry H. Arnold was reportedly anxious to receive the nomination.
